Costa Rica

Marriage equality landed in Costa Rica on May 26, 2020 — the first Central American jurisdiction to make the move, following a 2018 Constitutional Court ruling that gave Congress 18 months to act. Decriminalized in 1971. Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACHR) 2018 mandated recognition of marriage and adoption. Name change by gender identity allowed since 2018 (Supreme Electoral Tribunal · no medical requirements). Sex no longer appears on ID cards since October 2018. Employment anti-discrimination by sexual orientation (2020 reform) and hate crimes by SO/GI aggravated in the Penal Code (in force April 2022). Limitations: no single comprehensive anti-discrimination law, no legal recognition of non-binary, conversion therapy not banned. San José (Barrio Amón, La California area) and Manuel Antonio as LGBT destinations; Pride in San José in June.
