Cologne

Cologne has the most established LGBTQI+ scene in western Germany, built around two cores in the heart of the Innenstadt: Schaafenstraße (the main gay axis, a pedestrian street with 25+ venues, Iron and Mox among the classics) and the Bermudadreieck (the Bermuda Triangle around Heumarkt, the historic core with bars of Rhineland tradition such as the Vampire).

The scene is complemented by secondary poles: Belgisches Viertel (bohemian queer, design) and Ehrenfeld (young, multicultural, alternative). Cologne's Karneval (February-March) has strong queer participation and is one of the most LGBT-friendly carnivals in Europe, with groups such as Rosa Funken. Dense nightlife all year round, not only at CSD.

ColognePride / Christopher Street Day is held every July and is, according to Wikipedia, one of the biggest gay and lesbian events organised in Germany and one of the largest in Europe. Figures documented on Wikipedia: 35,000 participants and 750,000 visitors as early as 2001, 700,000 visitors in 2014, 60,000 participants and 1.4 million visitors in 2023. A record of constant growth.

The parade goes through the historic centre on the first Sunday of July. Supporting calendar: Cologne's Karneval (February-March, strong queer participation), Kölner Lichter (July, fireworks over the Rhine overlapping with CSD), regular events at the clubs of Schaafenstraße and the Bermudadreieck.

Cologne has a double gay core in the Innenstadt, 5-10 minutes on foot from each other. Schaafenstraße is the main axis: a pedestrian street with a concentration of bars, clubs and café-bars (Iron, Mox and others). The Bermudadreieck (Bermuda Triangle) is the historic core, a triangle formed by Pipinstraße, Mühlenbach and the Heumarkt area, with classic bars of Rhineland tradition and a more mature scene.

Both are right in the centre: a 5-minute walk to the Kölner Dom (the Gothic cathedral, a UNESCO site), 8 to the Hauptbahnhof, 5 to the Rhine. Excellent U-Bahn connections (Heumarkt, Neumarkt). The area fills up during CSD in July, but the nightlife is dense all year round.

Cologne is the LGBT hub of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany's most populous state. Schwules Netzwerk NRW headquartered here. Anyway historic LGBT youth center (Kamekestraße). Rubicon queer center with counseling, events and social services.
