Same-sex relations are criminalized under Section 377A of the Penal Code (enacted 1871 under British colonial rule), with up to 20 years' imprisonment, caning and fines. Muslim citizens may additionally be charged in Sharia courts, and foreigners may be deported. There is no legal recognition of same-sex unions. Enforcement does reach travelers: in May 2026 police detained 51 men (including foreigners) in a raid on a gay party at a Kuala Lumpur hotel, an operation authorities officially framed as an anti-drug bust.
