Guadalajara

Mexico's second city and one of its most gay-friendly, nicknamed the "Mexican San Francisco". The LGBTQI+ axis lives in Colonia Americana and Avenida Chapultepec: bars, cantinas and nightlife. Colonia Americana was named the world's coolest neighbourhood by Time Out (2022). Its big June Pride, the Marcha de la Diversidad Sexual, is one of Latin America's oldest: the first march was held in 1982.

Living
as LGBTQI+ in Guadalajara

Where people go out, when Pride is, which neighborhoods have their own scene — separated from the legal framework so you see street reality.

LGBTQI+ scene

The scene concentrates in Colonia Americana and Avenida Chapultepec, the corridor of bars, cantinas and nightlife that Guadalajara's own tourism board recognizes as one of the epicenters of the city's night. A local mix of traditional cantinas, terraces, rooftops and clubs, with a visible, normalized LGBTQI+ crowd.

Guadalajara is considered one of Mexico's most gay-friendly cities —nicknamed the "Mexican San Francisco"— and acted for decades as the big reference city to which Puerto Vallarta is a beach satellite. The Historic Center rounds out the offer with classic cantinas, though without a declared gay neighborhood.

Pride and events

The big June Pride is the Marcha de la Diversidad Sexual (popularly "Guadalajara Pride"), one of Latin America's oldest: the first march took place on May 8, 1982 (about 120 people, driven by the activism of Pedro Preciado and the GOHL group). It was not strictly continuous —there was a long gap of repression— but the large modern march re-consolidated from around the year 2000 and is today one of Mexico's biggest. The 2026 edition took place on June 13 and drew around 81,000 attendees (per Guadalajara's Fire and Civil Protection services), departing from Plaza Universidad and ending at the Glorieta de la Minerva.

There is also a separate, smaller, activist-led Marcha del Orgullo: in 2026 it was held on June 6 (about 7,000 people), organized by the Unión Diversa de Jalisco under the slogan «Sin miedo y sin fronteras», focused on migrants. Confirm each edition's dates and route with the organizers before traveling, as they can vary year to year.

Gay neighborhood · Colonia Americana

Colonia Americana is Guadalajara's reference LGBTQI+ neighborhood, structured around Avenida Chapultepec and its cultural corridor. Art deco mansions turned into cafés, galleries, bars and restaurants; a creative, walkable atmosphere. In 2022, Time Out named it the world's coolest neighbourhood.

It's both residential and a going-out zone, with daytime life (cafés, markets, culture) and nightlife (terraces, cantinas, clubs). Well connected to the Historic Center and the Glorieta Minerva. It lacks the symbolic seniority of Mexico City's Zona Rosa, but is today the visible heart of Guadalajara's scene.

Community and services

Jalisco was among the first states to reach marriage equality: the Supreme Court (SCJN) struck down the ban on January 26, 2016, and the city governments of Guadalajara, Zapopan and Tlaquepaque instructed their civil registries to marry same-sex couples. Since 2022 marriage equality is guaranteed across Mexico.

The city has an active community fabric (collectives such as Unión Diversa coordinate the Pride march) and public sexual-health services through the state and federal system (IMSS/ISSSTE). For tourists, private healthcare is accessible. Confirm PrEP, PEP and STI testing availability with each organization or clinic before traveling.

Practical tips
for traveling to Guadalajara

The practical stuff so your trip works — transport, accommodation, scene and where not to miss out. Information validated and reviewed on 2026-06-15.

→ Best

Best: Oct-May (dry) · Pride in June

Guadalajara has a mild climate nearly all year (altitude ~1,566 m). Dry season (Oct-May) is most comfortable: sunny days and cool nights. Rains (Jun-Sep) arrive as intense but brief afternoon storms; June Pride may catch rain. December-January nights are cold; bring a layer.

→ Spanish

Spanish · English in tourist areas and Americana

Language: Mexican Spanish. Reasonable English in hotels, restaurants of Colonia Americana/Chapultepec and tourist areas. Outside downtown, basic Spanish helps.

→ Peso

Peso · card downtown · cash in cantinas

Currency: Mexican Peso (MXN), 1€ ≈ 20 MXN. Card universal in hotels, formal restaurants and Americana bars. Cash needed in cantinas, markets, taxis and tips. ATMs abundant. Tips: 10-15% in restaurants.

→ Uber/Didi safe

Uber/Didi safe · Mi Macro · avoid street taxis

Uber and Didi are the convenient, safe option, especially at night and for the bar zone. The Mi Macro system and Light Rail line 3 cover main corridors. Within Colonia Americana, almost everything is walkable. From GDL airport (Miguel Hidalgo) to downtown: Uber/authorized taxi ~30-40 min depending on traffic.

→ Colonia Americana > Downtown > Chapultep

Colonia Americana > Downtown > Chapultepec

Colonia Americana is the first choice for immersion: boutique hotels and rentals walkable to the Av. Chapultepec bar corridor. The Historic Center works for monumental sightseeing and classic cantinas. Avoid far-out areas (outer Zapopan, Tlaquepaque) if you're after LGBTQI+ nightlife. Book ahead for June (Pride).

→ Public + private health

Public + private health · bottled water

Sexual health through the public state/federal system (IMSS/ISSSTE) and the private network (urban hospitals accessible to tourists). Confirm PrEP, PEP and STI testing availability with local clinics before traveling. Water: better bottled, not tap. 24h pharmacies in central zones.
