LGBTQI+ scene
Auckland's gay life concentrates on K' Road (Karangahape Road), the bohemian street that since the 1990s has been the centre of alternative and queer nightlife. The go-to club is Family Bar, with two dance floors and several bars; the street itself, with its 2021 rainbow crossing, is the vibe. Ponsonby, next door, adds gay-friendly cafés and restaurants.
It's not a huge scene —Auckland is a mid-sized city— but it's visible, comfortable and full of character. Everything is close and walkable between K' Road, Ponsonby and the centre. The takatāpui (Māori LGBTQI+) community also has its own, deeply respected presence.
