Practical tips
for traveling to Lima

The practical stuff so your trip works — transport, accommodation, scene and where not to miss out. Information validated and reviewed on 2026-05-18.

→ Best

Best: Dec-Apr (summer) · avoid June-Sep gloom

Lima has peculiar coastal desert climate: mild temps year-round (12-30°C) but winter (Jun-Sep) is grey with persistent drizzle and overcast skies all day. Summer (Dec-Apr) brings sun, functional beach and better light. Pride in June falls in full grey but city remains comfortable. Very little rain (10-30mm/year on coast).

→ Spanish

Spanish · English OK in Miraflores

Language: Peruvian Spanish. English OK in international hotels of Miraflores and San Isidro, formal restaurants and tourist attractions. Outside tourist axis Spanish is needed. Spanish speakers: no problem, clear vocabulary. Quechua is official but rare in urban Lima.

→ Peruvian sol

Peruvian sol · card downtown · cash in neighborhoods

Currency: Peruvian sol (PEN), 1€ ≈ 3.9 PEN. Card universal in hotels, formal restaurants, Miraflores, San Isidro and supermarkets. Cash needed in markets, street cabs, small tips. ATMs abundant. Tips: 10% restaurants (not always included in bill).

→ Uber/Cabify safe

Uber/Cabify safe · avoid street cabs · Metropolitano OK

Uber, Cabify, Didi are the safe default, especially at night. Don't take street cabs without app. Metropolitano (BRT) connects north-south with good frequency, safe by day, avoid rush hour. Metro Line 1 covers east side (no relevant tourist use). LIM airport (Callao) is 45-60 min from Miraflores by Uber depending on traffic — ~60-80 PEN.

→ Miraflores > Barranco

Miraflores > Barranco · avoid Centro at night

Miraflores is first choice for LGBT immersion: international hotels (Belmond, JW Marriott, Hilton), boutique and broad offer around Parque Kennedy. Barranco for bohemian vibe with small boutiques and friendly B&Bs. San Isidro for business but far from scene. Avoid Centro Histórico for sleeping — brutal heritage, unsafe at night.

→ Vía Libre for STIs

Vía Libre for STIs · bottled water · zero altitude

Vía Libre (Pueblo Libre) is private HIV/STI clinic with PrEP, fast testing and trans care. Tourists: private hospitals Anglo Americana, Clínica Internacional, Ricardo Palma (Miraflores/San Isidro). PEP 72h window in private hospital ER. Water: always bottled, not tap. Lima at sea level (no altitude sickness), but Cusco/Machu Picchu yes — coca or acetazolamide if combining trip.
