South Africa
South Africa is the only African country with marriage equality (Civil Union Act, November 30, 2006 · fifth country in the world to legalize it). It was the first country to constitutionally bar SO discrimination (1996 Constitution). Highly advanced legal framework: joint adoption since 2002, legal gender change since 2003, hate crimes law signed by Ramaphosa in May 2024. However, implementation is uneven: violence against lesbians (including so-called "corrective rape") and urban-rural divides persist. Marked urban-rural divide: major cities (Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban, Cape Town) fairly accepting.

Hate crimes law signed in 2024 improves the criminal framework.
