Same-sex relations are criminalized with life imprisonment (minimum 30 years) under Section 154 of the 1945 Penal Code (revised 1998). In Zanzibar, up to 14 years for men and 5 for women. There is no legal recognition of same-sex unions. The U.S. State Department explicitly classifies Tanzania at Level 3 mentioning the targeting of LGBTQI+ individuals.
