Chicago

Cradle of US LGBT activism decades before Stonewall. Northalsted (formerly Boystown) is the nation's first gay village officially recognized by a big city government — in 1998 the city installed the iconic rainbow pylons on Halsted Street. Chicago has ~150,000 LGBTQI+ residents and the Chicago Pride Parade (last Sunday of June) draws over a million. The Society for Human Rights founded here in 1924 was the first US gay rights organization.

Northalsted · first official gay village in the US

Northalsted (formerly Boystown) is the first US gay village officially recognized by a big city government. In 1998, Mayor Richard M. Daley approved a $3.2M restoration of the North Halsted Street corridor and installed the iconic rainbow pylons. Core: Halsted & Roscoe and Halsted between Belmont and Grace. Rebranded in November 2020 from Boystown to Northalsted by local business initiative (for inclusivity); Boystown remains in colloquial use. Legacy Walk on Halsted is the world's only outdoor LGBT history museum.

Community and services

Chicago is key in US LGBT activism history: Society for Human Rights (Henry Gerber, 1924) was the first formal US gay rights organization, officially recognized by Illinois on December 10, 1924. The Henry Gerber House is a National Historic Landmark. Illinois was the first state to repeal sodomy laws (July 28, 1961) — eight years before Stonewall. Infrastructure: Center on Halsted (largest Midwest LGBT center, 1,000+ daily), Howard Brown Health (1974, one of the nation's first LGBT-specific health centers). Lori Lightfoot (mayor 2019-2023) was the first openly lesbian and first African-American mayor in Chicago history.
