Prague

Prague, capital of Czechia and one of Europe's most beautiful cities, is a liberal Central European capital with its LGBTQI+ life concentrated in Vinohrady (Prague 2), around Náměstí Míru. Bars and clubs like Club TerMax, Termix, IP Club and Saints Bar, steps from the historic center. Prague Pride has run every August since 2011. Czechia decriminalized homosexuality in 1962 and, since January 2025, recognizes a union nearly equivalent to marriage (though without the «marriage» title). Note: the currency here is the Czech koruna, not the euro.

Living
as LGBTQI+ in Prague

Where people go out, when Pride is, which neighborhoods have their own scene — separated from the legal framework so you see street reality.

LGBTQI+ scene

Prague's gay life concentrates in Vinohrady (Prague 2), the area around Náměstí Míru square, recognized as the «gay quarter» by official tourism. It's a cluster scene: walkable, concentrated and 1-2 metro stops from the historic center.

The staples are nearly all in Vinohrady: Club TerMax (billed as the city's biggest gay club), Termix, IP Club and Saints Bar (also a meeting point for newcomers). Downtown (Staré Město) is Friends Club, with DJs and drag shows. A moderate-density scene —real and welcoming, but more contained than Berlin or Amsterdam—, with a good vibe year-round.

Pride and events

Prague Pride, run by Prague Pride z.s., has been held every August since 2011 and is Czechia's biggest LGBTQI+ event. In 2026 the festival runs 3–9 August, with the Rainbow Parade on Saturday the 8th from Wenceslas Square to Štvanice Island. New for 2026: the Pride Park moves to Štvanice after several years in Letná park, under the motto «Times Are Changing». The parade drew around 60,000 people in 2022.

Beyond Pride, the other big date is the Mezipatra Queer Film Festival (November, in Prague and Brno), one of Central Europe's reference LGBTQI+ film festivals.

Gay neighborhood · Vinohrady

Prague's gay neighborhood is Vinohrady (Prague 2), centered on Náměstí Míru square. Official tourism and Wikipedia call it the city's «gay quarter»: here are most of the LGBTQI+ bars, clubs and cafés, on streets like Vinohradská, Třebízského, Mikovcova and Polská.

Beyond the scene, Vinohrady is one of Prague's nicest neighborhoods: elegant, leafy, residential, with parks (Riegrovy sady), cafés and good food. It's 1-2 metro stops (lines A and C) from the historic center, combining atmosphere and convenience. Bohemian Žižkov, just north, extends the night.

Community and services

Prague has a well-organized LGBTQI+ community. Prague Pride z.s. runs the city's only LGBT+ community centre (Komunitní centrum, on Železná, Prague 1): talks, screenings, workshops, a queer library, support groups and legal advice. Saints Bar (Vinohrady) also works as an informal meeting point for newcomers.

For sexual health, the CheckPoint Dům světla by ČSAP (Prague 8 - Karlín) offers free, anonymous HIV and STI testing, and the same NGO's PrEP Point handles PrEP prescriptions. The reference hospital for HIV/infectious diseases is Bulovka (Prague 8). For a general emergency, the European number is 112. EU citizens: the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) covers necessary care.

Vinohrady (Praha 2)

Gay quarter · TerMax · Termix · Saints

Prague's gay quarter, around Náměstí Míru. It concentrates most of the LGBTQI+ bars, clubs and cafés: Club TerMax (the city's biggest gay club), Termix, IP Club and Saints Bar, on streets like Vinohradská, Třebízského and Polská. It's also an elegant, leafy, residential neighborhood with good food, 1-2 metro stops from the center.

Žižkov (Praha 3)

Bohemian · nightlife · next to Vinohrady

A bohemian, alternative district next to Vinohrady, famous for one of Europe's highest bar densities. Not the gay core, but its laid-back vibe and nightlife make it a natural complement if the night runs long. Easily walkable from the Vinohrady scene.

Staré Město / Nové Město (Praha 1)

Historic center · gay-friendly cafés

Prague's historic center: the Old Town Square, Charles Bridge, the astronomical clock and the tourist hotel offer. Not the scene's zone, but with gay-friendly cafés and venues (like Friends Club, with drag shows) and a short metro ride from Vinohrady.

Practical tips
for traveling to Prague

The practical stuff so your trip works — transport, accommodation, scene and where not to miss out. Information validated and reviewed on 2026-06-23.

→ Best

Best: Apr-May and Sep-Oct · Pride in August

Continental climate, four distinct seasons. The best windows to walk the city are late April–May and mid-September to mid-October (mild temperatures, less rain, cheaper hotels). Summer (Jun-Aug) is the warmest but with more storms, and it's when Prague Pride (August) falls. Winter is cold (~0°C) but beautiful with snow and Christmas markets.

→ Czech

Czech · English OK in tourist areas

The language is Czech. English works well at the airport, hotels, restaurants and the tourist area and among younger people, but it's not universal: off the tourist circuit, carry written addresses. A «Děkuju» (thank you) always goes down well.

→ Czech koruna, NOT euro

Czech koruna, NOT euro · cards OK · tip ~10%

Czech koruna (CZK / Kč), not euro — even though Czechia is in the EU. Some tourist-center businesses take euros, but at a bad rate (~10-20% worse), and transport and local shops don't: pay in koruna. Cards are very widely accepted; ATMs are everywhere (avoid the rip-off «Euronet» ones). Tipping ~10% in restaurants (rounding up), customary but not mandatory.

→ Metro/tram (DPP)

Metro/tram (DPP) · airport by bus+metro

The DPP network (3-line metro A/B/C, trams and buses) is excellent and cheap; validate your ticket on boarding. From PRG airport to downtown: trolleybus 59 (formerly bus 119) → metro line A (~25 min total) or the Airport Express → Central Station (Hlavní nádraží) (~33 min, 200 CZK). DPP tickets: 30 min ~39 CZK, 24 h ~150 CZK. Vinohrady and much of the center are walkable; a 24-72 h pass covers everything.

→ Vinohrady for immersion

Vinohrady for immersion · center for sightseeing

To be in the scene: stay in Vinohrady, at the foot of the bars and clubs and a metro step from the center. It's an elegant, quiet neighborhood with many gay-friendly hotels (more «gay-friendly» than «gay hotels» as such — hotels that welcome you without reservation). If you prioritize sights, the historic center (Staré Město / Nové Město) puts everything on foot, but it's more touristy and pricey. Book ahead for Pride Week (August).

→ CheckPoint Dům světla

CheckPoint Dům světla · PrEP · Bulovka

LGBTQI+ sexual health is well covered: the CheckPoint Dům světla by ČSAP (Prague 8 - Karlín) offers free, anonymous HIV, syphilis and hepatitis testing, and the same NGO's PrEP Point handles PrEP. PEP available by prescription within 72h. The reference hospital for HIV/infectious diseases is Bulovka (Prague 8). General emergency: 112. EU citizens: carry the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC); from outside the EU, travel insurance is advisable.
