Czech Republic is Central Europe's most liberal country on LGBTQI+ issues. Decriminalization in 1962. Registered partnership since 2006 with rights close to marriage. On January 1, 2025 the law equalizing partnership rights with marriage took effect, except for joint adoption. Broad anti-discrimination since 2009 (employment, education, housing, goods and services). In July 2025 the Health Ministry announced trans people would no longer need surgery or hormone treatment for legal gender change, following the May 2024 Constitutional Court ruling. No conversion therapy ban. 2020 survey: 67% support marriage equality; Pew 2013: 80% believe homosexuality should be accepted. Sexual orientation and gender identity as hate-crime aggravating factors
The Criminal Code reform in force on 1 January 2026 (approved by the Chamber of Deputies in May 2025) expands Section 42(b) to add sexual orientation and gender identity to the aggravating motives for hate crimes: an attack on an LGBTQI+ person is now punished as severely as one motivated by race, ethnicity, religion or political belief.
Legal gender change without surgery or hormones
The Czech Health Ministry dropped surgery and hormone-therapy prerequisites for legal gender change in July 2025, closing out the May 2024 Constitutional Court ruling.
