Reykjavík

Capital of Iceland and one of the world's most welcoming cities for LGBTQI+ travelers, though its nightlife scene is small: Kiki Queer Bar (Laugavegur 22) is the city's only dedicated queer bar, backed by queer-friendly venues like Gaukurinn. Everything gravitates to 101 Miðborg (downtown), around Laugavegur and the year-round Skólavörðustígur rainbow street climbing up to Hallgrímskirkja church. Reykjavík's draw isn't bar-hopping but one of the planet's most tolerant societies: Iceland's Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir was the world's first openly lesbian head of government (2009), marriage equality passed unanimously in 2010, and conversion therapy was banned in 2023. Reykjavík Pride (Hinsegin dagar, August) draws 80,000-100,000 people (police estimate, 2026) — one of the world's largest relative to population. Currency: Icelandic króna; an expensive, near-cashless city.

Living
as LGBTQI+ in Reykjavík

Where people go out, when Pride is, which neighborhoods have their own scene — separated from the legal framework so you see street reality.

LGBTQI+ scene

It's worth saying plainly: Reykjavík's LGBTQI+ nightlife scene is small. The only dedicated queer bar is Kiki Queer Bar (Laugavegur 22, 2nd and 3rd floors, entrance on Klapparstígur), a lively club with drag shows and a weekend staple. Alongside it is Gaukurinn, an alternative, queer-friendly venue (with gender-neutral bathrooms) with drag, comedy, open mic and karaoke, plus mixed downtown bars like Kaffibarinn.

Everything sits in 101 Miðborg, a few minutes' walk apart. This isn't a bar-hopping destination like Berlin or Madrid: Reykjavík is about an ultra-welcoming society, nature and an enormous Pride, more than venue density.

Pride and events

Reykjavík Pride (Hinsegin dagar, «queer days») has been run by Samtökin '78 since 1999 and takes place in August; proportionally, it's one of the world's biggest: in 2026 police estimated 80,000-100,000 people in the center (via RÚV), its largest edition ever. It began as a «queer weekend» in 1999; the first official parade drew up to ~12,000.

The parade (Gleðigangan) departs Hallgrímskirkja, descends the Skólavörðustígur rainbow street, Bankastræti and Lækjargata to Fríkirkjuvegur, and the open-air concert is held in Hljómskálagarður park. The week adds concerts, talks, family events and parties, mostly free.

101 and the rainbow street

Reykjavík has no enclosed «gay quarter» like Chueca or Le Village: the scene lives spread across downtown (101 Miðborg). Its most visible LGBTQI+ symbol is the Skólavörðustígur rainbow street, cobbled and painted rainbow year-round, climbing from downtown to Hallgrímskirkja church — the city's postcard and the Pride parade's starting point.

The nightlife axis is Laugavegur (home to Kiki), steps away. The Old Harbour / Grandi waterfront adds museums, seafood and whale-watching tours. All of 101 is a 15-20 minute walk.

Community and services

The community pillar is Samtökin '78, Iceland's National Queer Organization, founded in 1978 (one of Europe's longest-running). Its community centre is at Suðurgata 3, with a Thursday open house, advice and counseling; it's the best contact point for newcomers.

For sexual health: PrEP is free through the public system (specialist nursing at Landspítali, appointment by phone), there's free rapid HIV/STI testing (at clinics and pop-up points at Samtökin '78 and HIV Iceland), and PEP is dispensed at Landspítali hospital (72h window). Emergency: 112. EU/EEA citizens: European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).

101 Miðborg (Laugavegur)

Downtown · nightlife · Kiki · scene on Laugavegur

The heart of Reykjavík and its LGBTQI+ life. Laugavegur is the main shopping, café and nightlife street, home to Kiki Queer Bar (no. 22), the only dedicated queer bar, plus Gaukurinn and mixed venues. The whole center is a 15-20 minute walk end to end.

Skólavörðustígur + Hallgrímskirkja

Permanent rainbow street · city's postcard

The cobbled slope painted rainbow year-round climbing from downtown to Hallgrímskirkja church, Reykjavík's most iconic building. It's the city's postcard shot and the Pride parade's starting point. Galleries, Icelandic design and cafés.

Old Harbour / Grandi

Old Harbour · whales · museums · Marina

The reconverted waterfront: whale-watching tours depart here, and it gathers museums (Whales of Iceland, FlyOver Iceland), seafood spots and the gay-friendly Reykjavik Marina hotel. A pleasant 10-15 minute walk from downtown.

Practical tips
for traveling to Reykjavík

The practical stuff so your trip works — transport, accommodation, scene and where not to miss out. Information validated and reviewed on 2026-08-18.

→ Best

Best: June-August · Pride in August · auroras Sep-Mar

Summer (Jun-Aug) is the comfortable window: 10-15°C, very long days with near-24-hour daylight in June, all nature accessible. Reykjavík Pride falls in early August. For northern lights, September to March (dark skies). Winter is long, dark and windy, but peak aurora and hot-spring season. Book ahead in summer and aurora season.

→ Icelandic

Icelandic · universal English

The language is Icelandic, but English is universal: Iceland is among the world's most English-proficient non-anglophone countries. You need no Icelandic for an LGBTQI+ visit; hotels, bars, tours and healthcare all work in English. A «takk» (thank you) always goes down well.

→ Icelandic króna

Icelandic króna · cashless · expensive city

Currency: Icelandic króna (ISK), not euro. Iceland is one of the world's most expensive countries and nearly cashless: contactless cards (and Apple/Google Pay) work for everything, even tiny amounts — you barely need cash. Budget generously (beer ~1,400-1,800 ISK, meal ~3,500-6,000 ISK). Tipping not expected (service included).

→ Flybus from airport

Flybus from airport · 101 on foot · car for day trips

From Keflavík airport (KEF, ~50 km) to downtown: the Flybus leaves ~40 min after each landing and reaches the BSÍ terminal in ~45 min (10-min walk from Hallgrímskirkja and Laugavegur). 101 is fully walkable. Around town, Strætó buses (app). No metro or train. For the Golden Circle, South Coast or Ring Road, rent a car or take an organized tour.

→ 101 Miðborg > Grandi/Old Harbour

101 Miðborg > Grandi/Old Harbour

To be in the mix: stay in 101 Miðborg, at the foot of Laugavegur and Kiki — gay-friendly options like 101 Hotel (design boutique), Kvosin Downtown or Canopy by Hilton. In Grandi / Old Harbour (waterfront, 10-15 min walk) is the gay-friendly Reykjavik Marina. Prices are high year-round; book well ahead for summer and for Pride (August).

→ Free PrEP

Free PrEP · free testing · Landspítali · Samtökin '78

Sexual health is well covered: PrEP is free through the public system (specialist nursing at Landspítali, appointment by phone) and there's free rapid HIV/STI testing at clinics and pop-up points at Samtökin '78 and HIV Iceland. PEP is prepared at Landspítali hospital (72h). Emergency: 112. EU/EEA citizens: carry the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC); from outside the EU, travel insurance is advisable (expensive country).
