as LGBTQI+ in Stockholm

Where people go out, when Pride is, which neighborhoods have their own scene — separated from the legal framework so you see street reality.

LGBTQI+ scene

Wikipedia describes Sweden as "one of the world's most LGBTQI+-tolerant and accepting countries", and Stockholm concentrates that openness in a distributed scene with no single cluster like Chueca or Castro. The queer/bohemian core is Södermalm.

Pride and events

Stockholm Pride takes place each year in late July or early August and is, per Wikipedia, "the largest pride event in Scandinavia" since 1998. 2017 Wikipedia figure: 3-mile parade with 45,000 participants and 500,000 spectators. Stockholm co-hosted EuroPride 2018 with West Pride (Gothenburg).

Södermalm · bohemian island · Mariatorget

Stockholm has no closed "Chueca". The scene lives distributed, anchored in Södermalm, the bohemian island south of the centre. Classics: Side Track (historic gay bar) and Mälarpaviljongen (queer-friendly summer terrace on Riddarfjärden lake).

Community and services

Stockholm is the birthplace of RFSL (Swedish Federation for LGBT Rights), founded in October 1950 as the Swedish branch of the 1948 Danish Federation (Wikipedia) — one of the world's oldest continuously operating LGBT organisations. National HQ in the city. Venhälsan (Södersjukhuset) is Stockholm's flagship LGBT clinic, covering PrEP, trans care and free HIV/STI testing.
