Spring (March-May) combines cherry blossom and Tokyo Rainbow Pride. Autumn (October-November) brings momiji. Avoid Golden Week (Apr 29 – May 5): prices skyrocket.
Japanese dominates. Ni-chome tourist-oriented bars operate in basic English. Most small bars are Japanese-only and may have locals-only rules (cultural norm, not homophobic). JR/Metro fully in English.
Cash (yen) still dominates in Ni-chome small bars. Cards work at hotels, chains, konbini (Family Mart, 7-Eleven, Lawson). IC card (Suica/Pasmo) for transport. No tipping. Cover charge (otoshi) common in Ni-chome bars.
World's best system. Ni-chome 2 min walk from Shinjuku-sanchome Station. Last train ~00:30. HND (Haneda, 30-40 min) preferable to NRT (Narita, 60-90 min).
Shinjuku ward is the obvious choice. Shibuya cosmopolitan equivalent, 5 min metro to Ni-chome. Roppongi for international nightlife. Capsule and business hotels (APA, Toyoko Inn) cheap and clean.
Excellent system but limited for uninsured foreigners. HIV/STI tests at private clinics — 5,000-15,000 ¥. PrEP not covered by national insurance. PEP available in 72h window.
Tokyo Metropolis launched the Tokyo Partnership Oath System, covering local rights (municipal housing, hospital visitation, administrative procedures). Not equivalent to marriage (still nonexistent at national level in Japan).
2023 edition at Yoyogi Park celebrated as full return after 2020-2021 pandemic cancellations. Marks the comeback of one of East Asia's largest Prides.
