Practical tips
for traveling to Taipei

The practical stuff so your trip works — transport, accommodation, scene and where not to miss out. Information validated and reviewed on 2026-05-18.

→ Best

Best: October-November · avoid June-September (typhoons)

October-November is the best time: 20-25°C, low humidity, clear skies, coincides with Taiwan Pride (last Saturday of October). June-September is typhoon season — sweltering, torrential rain, possible typhoon disruptions.

→ Mandarin Chinese

Mandarin Chinese · basic English in tourist zones

Mandarin is official (traditional script, not simplified). In Ximending, international hotels and Xinyi English is basic-functional. Red House bar staff often manage English. MRT fully bilingual.

→ New Taiwan Dollar

New Taiwan Dollar · cash + EasyCard · cards growing

New Taiwan Dollar (NT$ / TWD). Cash still dominates in small bars, night markets, street food. EasyCard for MRT, bus, 7-Eleven. 7-Eleven ATMs accept foreign cards 24h. No tipping.

→ Spotless MRT

Spotless MRT · Ximen 2 min walk · Uber/YouBike

Taipei MRT is one of Asia's best: 5 lines, clean, punctual, universal EasyCard. Red House 2 min walk from MRT Ximen. Uber works perfectly and is cheap. YouBike practical. Airport: TPE Taoyuan via Airport MRT (35 min to center).

→ Ximending = core

Ximending = core · Da'an = quieter stay

Ximending is the obvious choice for gay immersion: walking to Red House plaza, broad boutique and mid-range hotel offering. Da'an second option for quieter residential stay. Xinyi for international luxury (Marriott, Grand Hyatt).

→ Excellent healthcare

Excellent healthcare · accessible PrEP · free testing

Taiwan has one of the world's best healthcare systems. Free anonymous HIV/STI testing through Taiwan Lourdes Association. PrEP/PEP available via prescription, more accessible than many Western countries. International hospitals attend in English.
