Valletta

Malta's LGBTQI+ nightlife scene is compact but established, and it isn't in the capital but a few kilometres away, in Paceville / St. Julian's, the island's nightlife district. There you'll find its two anchors: Michelangelo (Malta's only gay club, two floors with bars and dance floors, drag shows) and Le Chandelier (opened 2010). The rest of Paceville is very gay-friendly mixed nightlife.

In Valletta itself there are charming bars like Maori (seafront) or Yard 32 (gin and tapas). Everyday LGBTQI+ visibility on the street is high year-round.

Malta Pride takes place every September, run by Allied Rainbow Communities (ARC). It began in 2004 as a modest march in Valletta (MGRM gathered around 50 people under the theme «Gay Rights? Human Rights!») and grew strongly from 2015. In 2026 Pride Week runs 4–13 September, with the parade on Saturday the 12th through Valletta's streets, followed by a concert and party.

The big milestone was EuroPride 2023, held in Valletta (7-17 Sep, theme «Equality from the Heart»): over 38,000 participants, the largest LGBTQI+ event ever held in Malta. Pride Week also brings parties, conferences, fashion shows and even a Pride Boat Party.

Malta has no enclosed «gay quarter»; LGBTQI+ life spreads across three nearby areas. Paceville / St. Julian's is the nightlife core (Michelangelo, Le Chandelier) and where hotels and resorts cluster. Valletta —the capital, a UNESCO site— brings the culture, the charming bars (Maori, Yard 32) and the Pride parade. Sliema, opposite, is the promenade and shopping zone, with a ferry to Valletta in minutes.

Everything is very close (the island is small): 8-10 km from the airport to the coast, and you hop between Valletta, Sliema and St. Julian's by bus, ferry or taxi in no time.

The community fabric is solid for a small country. Allied Rainbow Communities (ARC) runs Malta Pride and GayMalta; the MGRM (Malta LGBTIQ Rights Movement) —which called the first march in 2004— stays active in rights and support. There are also HIV Malta and LGBTI+ Gozo.

On sexual health, Malta took a leap in January 2026: PrEP and PEP are free through the public system (Sexual Health Malta). HIV/STI testing is free and confidential at the GU Clinic at Mater Dei (no referral, no age limit) and at Checkpoint Malta community sessions (Valletta, Gozo and Paola, results in 20 min). PEP is accessed at the GU Clinic or, after hours, at Emergency (A&E), 72h window. Emergency: 112. EU/EEA citizens: European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).
