Slovakia decriminalized homosexuality in 1962 when part of Czechoslovakia. No marriage or civil union recognition; in June 2014 Parliament passed a constitutional amendment defining marriage as a man-woman union (102 votes for, 18 against). Broad anti-discrimination since 2004; in 2008 the framework was widened to cover SO and GI across employment, education, housing and social care. Hate crimes by sexual orientation since May 2013. On October 12, 2022 two people were murdered in a far-right attack outside Bratislava's Tepláren gay bar, an event that marked the country and triggered LGBTQI+ mobilization. Under Robert Fico's government (2023-), 2025 constitutional amendment removes gender identity recognition and restricts adoption to married couples only. Pew 2017: 47% support marriage equality, 47% oppose.
