Same-sex relations are criminalized under Article 148 of the 1991 Criminal Act (amended in 2009 and 2020), with life imprisonment for a third offense after the death penalty for sodomy was abolished in July 2020. There is no legal recognition of same-sex unions. The U.S. State Department and UK FCDO advise against all travel to Sudan due to the ongoing armed conflict.
