In April 2024, the Iraqi Parliament passed a law explicitly criminalizing same-sex relations with up to 15 years imprisonment, fines and deportation, plus up to 7 years for 'promoting homosexuality'. There is no legal recognition of same-sex unions. Several foreign affairs ministries advise against all travel to Iraq due to conflict, terrorism and kidnapping.
