Maspalomas

Resort hub in southern Gran Canaria (San Bartolomé de Tirajana municipality, ~54,000 residents), Maspalomas and adjacent Playa del Inglés form one of the world's biggest gay beach destinations, on a par with Sitges or Mykonos. The epicentre is the Yumbo Centrum (1982): a shopping centre by day and a gay village by night, with 30+ LGBTQI+ bars and clubs —drag, cabaret, dance, leather— that come alive at dusk. Below it, 12 km of protected dunes and a historic gay nudist beach around kiosks 6 and 7. A quintessential winter destination (average >18 °C year-round, ~2,800 hours of sun), its gay calendar runs on three big events: Bear Carnival (March), Maspalomas Pride (May) and Winter Pride (November), plus the famous Carnival Drag Gala. Full Spanish legal framework (marriage 2005, 2023 trans-LGBTI law). Gran Canaria Airport (LPA) ~32 km away.

Living
as LGBTQI+ in Maspalomas

Where people go out, when Pride is, which neighborhoods have their own scene — separated from the legal framework so you see street reality.

LGBTQI+ scene

The Yumbo Centrum is a shopping centre by day and a gay village by night: probably Europe's biggest concentration of gay nightlife under one roof, with 30+ bars and clubs (drag, cabaret, leather, dance, terraces). Action starts at dusk (5–6 pm) and peaks around midnight; by day it's an ordinary strip mall that transforms at nightfall when venues hang out the rainbow flags.

Pride and events

Maspalomas' gay calendar runs on three big annual events, all orbiting the Yumbo: Bear Carnival (March, 3,000+ bears and Europe's biggest bear pool parties), Maspalomas Pride (May —in 2026, 4–10 May, parade Saturday 9—, described by Wikipedia as one of Europe's largest pride parties, with 100,000+ in 2011) and Winter Pride (November, 40,000+ visitors). Plus the Maspalomas Carnival Drag Gala, a national reference broadcast on TVE.

Gay area · the Yumbo and the dunes beach

Maspalomas has no administrative gay neighbourhood: the scene organises around two poles. By night, the Yumbo Centrum (Av. Estados Unidos) concentrates the nightlife. By day, the gay beach in the protected dunes —around kiosks 6 and 7— offers a relaxed naturist vibe, reachable on foot from the Riu Palace area (~25 min) or along the beach from Playa del Inglés.

Community and services

Established LGBT fabric around the Yumbo (GLAY association). For sexual health, Checkpoint Canarias (founded 2022) offers free, anonymous rapid HIV/syphilis/hepatitis/STI tests in Maspalomas–Playa del Inglés. PrEP in the Canaries is managed via the Canary Health Service primary care (through your GP).

Neighborhoods
gay friendly · Maspalomas

4 areas with their own scene — documented LGBTQI+ venues, bars and nightlife.

Playa del Inglés

Gay heart · Yumbo Centrum · nightlife

1960s tourist core, with renovated tower blocks and the Yumbo Centrum driving the whole gay scene (lodging, bars, parties). The hub of LGBTQI+ life day and night.

Maspalomas (dunas / faro)

Protected dunes · 1890 lighthouse · gay beach

South of Playa del Inglés: protected dunes reserve (4 km²) and the 1890 lighthouse. The gay nudist beach (kiosks 6–7) is along this stretch, with a relaxed naturist vibe by day, ~25 min walk from the Riu Palace.

Yumbo Centrum

De-facto gay village · Pride · Bear Carnival · Drag Gala

Not a residential district but the shopping-centre epicentre: by day 200+ businesses; by night 30+ gay bars and clubs with rainbow flags. Host of Maspalomas Pride, Bear Carnival and the Carnival Drag Gala (broadcast on TVE).

San Agustín

Neighbouring resort · quieter · family

Quieter, more classic resort east of the centre. Less gay density than Playa del Inglés, a more residential, family feel; a good base for a calmer stay 10 minutes from the Yumbo.
