United Kingdom

United Kingdom recognizes marriage equality in England, Wales, and Scotland since 2014, and Northern Ireland since 2020. Equality Act 2010 prohibits discrimination by sexual orientation and gender identity nationally. Legal gender change via Gender Recognition Certificate (GRA 2004) requires 2 years of lived experience and medical diagnosis. The Supreme Court ruled in April 2025 (For Women Scotland) that "sex" in the Equality Act means biological sex and that a GRC does not change legal sex for the Act's purposes; a trans-inclusive conversion-practices bill is a legislative priority (King's Speech, May 2026) but remains unlegislated.
