Living
as LGBTQI+ in Brighton

Where people go out, when Pride is, which neighborhoods have their own scene — separated from the legal framework so you see street reality.

LGBTQI+ scene

St James's Street, in Kemptown, is Brighton's queer artery: LGBTQI+ bars and pubs that fill every night and spill onto the pavements on sunny weekends, with a density of venues that rivals anywhere in Europe. It balances relaxed pub culture with clubs, cabaret and drag.

Pride and events

Brighton & Hove Pride is the UK's biggest Pride: from a 1973 march to today's festival, it draws ~500,000 people to the city in early August, with a community parade from the seafront to Preston Park (the «Fabuloso» / Pride in the Park festival since 1996) and the closure of St James's Street for the Pride Village Party. Plus Trans Pride Brighton (July), founded in 2013 as the UK's first trans-specific Pride and now the largest of its kind in Europe.

Kemptown · the UK's densest gay community

Kemptown isn't just nightlife: it's a real resident community. The area has 20.11% LGB+ residents, the highest of any area in the UK (2021 census), and the city overall ~11%, also the highest in the country. St James's Street lines bars, cafés, specialist shops and gay hotels; around it, 10–15 min on foot from the centre, the whole neighbourhood breathes LGBTQI+ year-round.

Community and services

Brighton has a very strong LGBTQI+ community fabric: Switchboard (helpline since 1975), MindOut (LGBT mental health), Allsorts (youth), The Clare Project (trans). For sexual health, the NHS Brighton Sexual Health (SHAC) and the Claude Nicol Centre offer HIV/STI testing, PrEP and PEP free without referral; Terrence Higgins Trust runs testing in the city. The «Tay» AIDS memorial in New Steine is living memory.
