Manchester has the UK's most concentrated LGBTQI+ scene outside London: 30+ bars and clubs densely packed around Canal Street. Wikipedia describes Canal Street as the centre of the most successful gay village in Europe. Manto bar (1990) catalyzed the modern model with its large windows.

Pride and events

Manchester Pride held during the August bank holiday weekend since 1985. Attendance: 100,000 in 2002, 170,000+ in 2016 and 2019 per organizers. Europride 2003 hosted. Since 2003 the Gay Village runs as enclosed wristband event. Organizational change 2025-2026: Manchester Pride Events Ltd entered voluntary liquidation in October 2025. Pride continues in August 2026 (28-31 Aug, bank holiday) under a new community entity, Manchester Village Pride CIC, backed by Manchester City Council, LGBT Foundation and George House Trust.
