Living
as LGBTQI+ in London

Where people go out, when Pride is, which neighborhoods have their own scene — separated from the legal framework so you see street reality.

LGBTQI+ scene

London has the most multipolar LGBTQI+ scene in Europe: no single neighborhood absorbs all the weight. Soho concentrates the historic core; Vauxhall is the south-river circuit hub; Shoreditch and Dalston host alternative queer. Heaven (since 1979) is one of Europe's biggest gay clubs.

Pride and events

Pride in London in June-July draws more than 1.5M attendees. Direct descendant of the UK's first march on 1 July 1972 (200 people) organized by the Gay Liberation Front. WorldPride 2012 hosted. UK Black Pride and Trans Pride London complete the calendar.

Soho · gay neighborhood

Soho is London's historic LGBTQI+ neighborhood, in the heart of the West End. Core: Old Compton Street and crossing streets. Recognized as gay village in the early 90s. Admiral Duncan still functions as living memorial. Gay's the Word declared LGBTQI+ pilgrimage site by English Heritage. Tube: Leicester Square, Tottenham Court Road, Piccadilly Circus 3-5 min walk.

Community and services

London concentrates the UK's densest LGBTQI+ infrastructure. Stonewall UK (founded 24 May 1989) is today Europe's largest LGBT organization. Switchboard (1974) still active. Gay's the Word (1979) is the reference LGBT bookshop. 56 Dean Street (NHS, Soho) is the reference sexual health clinic with free PrEP for residents and rapid HIV/STI testing.
